Journey Through Real Estate Law

What to Look for in a Real Estate Attorney

A real estate attorney is a lawyer who specializes in property law. This can cover anything from buying and selling property, land development, as well as property disputes. If you're buying or selling property, a real estate attorney can represent you throughout the process. They can also review any paperwork and advise you on anything you should do. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when looking for a real estate attorney.

Law School

Obviously, you want to make sure that any lawyer you hire is actually a lawyer. Ask them what law school they went to, when they went, and what they did or didn't like about the experience. Simple questions like these can help you make sure they actually went to law school. These questions are also a great way to break the ice and can help establish a friendly working relationship with your lawyer.

Bar Association

To actually practice law, a lawyer needs to graduate law school and pass their state's Bar exam. Furthermore, every state's Bar Association requires practicing lawyers to regularly renew their registration. Visit your state's Bar Association website and search the registry for your lawyer's name. You'll be able to see whether or not they passed the Bar, if they are still in good standing, and if they have any issues or infractions.

Experience

The experience your lawyer has in real estate law will impact how well they can assist you with your needs and interests. Look through their resume and see where they interned during law school. Also, check what firms they've worked for over the years and what kind of work they've done. This will give you an idea of their strengths. Finally, don't hesitate to ask them questions about their experiences. Doing so gives them a chance to show off their accomplishments and can help put you at ease.

Certifications

For most areas of the law, the only two requirements to practice are graduating law school and passing the Bar exam. While certifications aren't usually necessary, they can demonstrate additional dedication and expertise. Find out if the lawyer you're hiring has taken additional courses, has been additionally certified as a real estate agent, or has special licenses related to property law. If they do, they'll be better able to help and represent you.

Buying or selling property is one of the biggest transactions you'll ever make. While the process is necessarily complicated, it doesn't have to be stressful. By following these tips and doing your own research, you can hire a real estate attorney to guide, help, and represent you through the whole process.

About Me

Journey Through Real Estate Law

Hey there. Welcome to my site. I'm Giles Giroux. I made this site to explore the world of real estate law. The process of buying or selling a home is fraught with difficulties that could lead to costly legal matters. Securing an attorney in the beginning stages could save everyone a lot of trouble and money in the end. I learned about the importance of hiring an attorney during my first home purchase. I was clueless about the entire process from required forms to the safe exchange of funds. I was also unaware of the requirements for inspections and repairs before the sale could go through. Thankfully, I ended up with an attorney who could help me with those matters. I will use this site to explore similar matters and discuss them with my readers. I hope you come back soon to visit my site.
